Julie Ann Stenberg

About Julie Stenberg

I have played trombone with local gospel, blues, rock, jazz and swing bands. I am now playing trombone with the Roseville Community Jazz Band, and with an ensemble at the West Bank School of Music in Minneapolis. I have some experience playing guitar, trumpet, piano, drums and various percussion instruments. I also gave trombone lessons while in college.

I compose jazz/fusion pieces, and arrange them for various sizes of groups and instrumentation. I also have composed electronic music.

I played in the Twin Cities Institute for Talented Youth jazz band every summer while in junior high and high school, and I have taken lessons on trombone, piano, guitar and drums. I then studied at Berklee School of Music in Boston. While there, I took classes in music theory, ear training, composition and arranging, and played in many different ensembles. Currently, I am studying classical theory with Paul Renz of the West Bank School of Music. I also have a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota.

I obtained money from the Minnesota Composers' Forum to have one of my big band compositions ("Impressions of the Working World - I (The Rotten Job)") read by the University of Minnesota Jazz Band. Several of my compositions have been included in Sonic Circuits Annual Minnesota Composers' Forum / Macalester College Electronic Music Festival. The Roseville Community Jazz Band has performed a number of my works, including "Impressions of the Working World - II", "Starting Now", and "Roseville Blues" at concerts which were given in public parks. I also have performed a number of my compositions on the trombone, along with a taped MIDI backup, at the fall showcase series at the Minnesota State Law Library, and will be participating in the Walker Art Museum / Minnesota Composers' Forum series "Late Night at Gallery Eight" this spring.
